PILOTLESS ROBOTS
An unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) is a vehicle that operates in contact with the ground and without a human presence on board. UGVs can be used for many applications where it may be inconvenient, dangerous or impossible to have a human operator present. Generally, the vehicle will have a set of sensors to observe the environment and make autonomous decisions on its behaviour or transmit the information to a human operator in a different location who will control the vehicle via remote control.
UGVs must operate efficiently capable of performing a variety of tasks to support the needs of large-scale agriculture. Two main approaches are discussed: the automation of conventional vehicles and the development of specially designed mobile platforms. The latter includes both wheeled and tracked robots and requires an analysis of their adaptability to the terrain and crops.

For a long time, the tractor has been the central vehicle for performing most of the work required in a cultivated field. Equipped with the right attachments, this machine can cultivate, plant, fertilise, spray, transport, mow and even harvest. Their adaptability to a variety of tasks makes tractors a prime target for automation, enabling productivity gains, improving safety and reducing uptime.

When equipped with the XAG JetSprayer™ system, the R150 can perform fully autonomous crop spraying operations with the maximum efficiency* of 5 hectares per hour.
However, UGVs suitable for agriculture remain far from commercialisation, although many intermediate results have been achieved with the help of this agricultural equipment, from harvesting to precise pesticide application. Essentially, these systems are installed on farmers' own tractors and generally consist of a computer (the controller), a steering control device, a localisation system (mainly based on RTK-GPS) and a security system (mainly based on LIDAR).
